The City of Bath
The City of Bath or Aquae Sulis was founded by the Romans as a spa and you can experience life as a Roman when you visit the Roman Baths. The city was developed further during the Georgian and Victorian periods and the spa heritage continues with the Thermae Bath Spa which uses the mineral-rich natural thermal spring water in the 4 thermal baths.
The city of Bath offers many historic sights including the Georgian architecture of The Royal Crescent and The Circus, the imposing Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge which is modelled on the Pontevecchio in Venice.
If you want to take in a museum there are plenty to choose from: The Roman Baths, No.1 Royal Crescent, the Jane Austen Centre, the Fashion Museum to name but a few.
the bath skyline – historic sites
Bath Taxi Tours can take you out of the main city and along Bath’s spectacular Skyline where you can take in the beautiful views as well as exploring Alexander park with spectacular views across the world heritage City of Bath, the high vantage point across Bath where buses can’t go, and The American Museum at Claverton Manor.
Prior Park also is a grand palladian mansion that sits on the hillside overlooking the city. The house, which is now an independent school, was built by Ralph Allen to show the use of the locally mined honey-colured limestone Bath Stone. The gardens were landscaped in a natural style by the 18th century poet Alexander Pope and the famous landscape gardener Capability Brown. They are now owned by the National Trust, and are well worth a visit to admire its most famous feature, the Palladian bridge.
the kennet & avon canal
The American Museum at Claverton Down you will be able to see the Kennet and Avon Canal in the valley below.
The canal runs from Bristol to Reading covering 87 miles (140 kilometres) and originally transported coal and stone in the early 1800’s. It is now a popular heritage tourism desination.
At the foot of Brassknocker Hill, we can stop off at Brassknocker Basin. You can enjoy some refreshments at the cafe and admire the many colourful canal boats that are moored there. If you want to take a short walk you can gaze up at the majestic Dundas Aqueduct from Dundas Wharf where you can see the tollhouse, warehouse and crane that served the aqueduct when it was used for transporting coal.
The spectacular Dundas Aqueduct was completed in 1810 by John Rennie the reknowned Scottish civil engineer. It was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1951 which makes it as important as Stonehenge.
Just eight miles from Bath is the picturesque town of Bradford-on-Avon which is well worth a visit. It is a small town that is also built of golden-coloured Bath stone. There is a a medieval stone bridge in the heart of the town that carries all the traffic over the river Avon. For hundreds of years the main local industry was wool and cloth which can be seen throughout the town with the old mill buildings, the fine stone houses of the merchants and the rows of smaller weavers cottages on the hillsides.
Although it is a small town, you will find a good selection of independent shops, galleries, cafes and tearooms as well as not one but two churches: the small Saxon St Laurence church, and the larger Norman Holy Trinity church.
